It’s Time You Learned Why I Really Married Grace
Caleb’s grip tightened around my hands, the cold sweat pooling in his palms making me shiver. “Emily, it’s time you understood why I really married her,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. The tension in the air felt suffocating, and I could barely breathe.
My mind raced, each frightening possibility crowding out the others. “Caleb… why would you say that?” I managed to squeeze out, the words leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. I didn’t want to think he’d married Grace for something sinister.
He looked at me with haunted eyes, the weight of the world resting on his shoulders. “It’s more complicated than anything you’re imagining.” He reached into his jacket, and my heart sank. What could he possibly reveal that would make this moment any worse?
“You should probably sit down,” he said, pulling out a folded piece of paper. The sight of my name scrawled across it sent a jolt through me. “This is from Grace,” he added, a tremor in his voice.
I stared at the letter and back at him, a whirlwind of confusion and dread swirling inside me. “What does it say?”
“Just… read it carefully,” he urged, almost pleading with me. The gravity of the situation hung heavily between us. I could feel my stomach twisting in knots, the anticipation making me feel almost nauseous.
