Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions
Place the sliced onions in a bowl and toss them with 1 teaspoon of salt. Transfer them to a colander and let them sit for about 30 minutes, tossing occasionally.
  2. Remove Excess Moisture
Place the onions in a clean kitchen towel, gather the edges, and squeeze firmly to remove as much liquid as possible.
  3. Form the Patties
Divide the onions into four small mounds on a tray or baking sheet. Shape the ground beef into four loosely packed balls and place one ball on top of each onion mound.
  4. Flatten the Burgers
Press each beef ball down firmly so the onions stick to the meat. Flatten the patties to about 4 inches in diameter. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Cook the Burgers
Heat butter and vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Place the patties onion-side down into the skillet.
  6. Caramelize the Onions
Cook for 6–8 minutes until the onions are deep golden brown and slightly crispy around the edges.
  7. Flip the Burgers
Flip the burgers and increase the heat to high. Cook the other side for about 2 minutes until well browned.
  8. Add Cheese
Place 1–2 slices of American cheese on each burger and allow it to melt.
  9. Assemble the Burgers
Spread mayonnaise, mustard, and pickles on the top buns. Place the cooked burger on the bottom bun and close with the top bun.
  10. Serve
Serve immediately while hot and juicy.
