Instructions
- Prepare the Onions
Place the sliced onions in a bowl and toss them with 1 teaspoon of salt. Transfer them to a colander and let them sit for about 30 minutes, tossing occasionally. - Remove Excess Moisture
Place the onions in a clean kitchen towel, gather the edges, and squeeze firmly to remove as much liquid as possible. - Form the Patties
Divide the onions into four small mounds on a tray or baking sheet. Shape the ground beef into four loosely packed balls and place one ball on top of each onion mound. - Flatten the Burgers
Press each beef ball down firmly so the onions stick to the meat. Flatten the patties to about 4 inches in diameter. Season with salt and pepper. - Cook the Burgers
Heat butter and vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Place the patties onion-side down into the skillet. - Caramelize the Onions
Cook for 6–8 minutes until the onions are deep golden brown and slightly crispy around the edges. - Flip the Burgers
Flip the burgers and increase the heat to high. Cook the other side for about 2 minutes until well browned. - Add Cheese
Place 1–2 slices of American cheese on each burger and allow it to melt. - Assemble the Burgers
Spread mayonnaise, mustard, and pickles on the top buns. Place the cooked burger on the bottom bun and close with the top bun. - Serve
Serve immediately while hot and juicy.
