The priest began the ceremony.
My hands trembled so much I could barely hold them together.
“Before I pronounce you husband and wife…” the priest said, “does anyone object?”
A pause.
Then—
“I object.”
The entire church froze.
The voice came from the beggar.
Julian shot up instantly.
“What are you doing?! I paid you to follow the script!”
But the man didn’t move.
Slowly, deliberately, he raised his hands.
And then—
He removed the disguise.
The filthy wig came off first.
Then the fake beard.
Then the soot wiped away from his face.
And piece by piece…
The illusion disappeared.
The church gasped.
Because standing there now was not a beggar.
It was a man the world recognized instantly.
Powerful.
Elegant.
Dangerous.
And very much alive.
“My name is not Lando,” he said coldly, his voice filling the cathedral. “It’s Gabriel Imperial.”
A wave of shock swept through the room.
Julian went pale.
“No… that’s impossible…”
Gabriel’s gaze locked onto him.
“I am the CEO of Imperial Conglomerate.”
The entire room erupted in chaos.
Phones came out. Cameras flashed. Whispers turned into panic.
Julian staggered backward.
“That company… they’re the ones I’m negotiating a fifty-billion investment with…”
Gabriel smiled—but there was no warmth in it.
“Yes. And you’ve been under investigation for months.”
He raised a flash drive.
“This contains every illegal transaction you’ve hidden. Stock manipulation. Fraud. Money laundering.”
Julian’s voice broke. “That’s fake!”
Gabriel’s tone sharpened.
“Then explain why National Bureau of Investigation agents are standing outside this church.”
The doors slammed open.
Men in uniform entered.
The guests screamed.
Julian froze.
Because everything he built… was collapsing in real time.
Within minutes, it was over.
He was dragged away, shouting, begging, trying to bargain with a system that no longer belonged to him.
And I just stood there.
Watching.
Not sad.
Not angry.
Just… finally free of him.
When silence returned, Gabriel turned toward me.
The disguise was gone, but something softer remained in his expression.
Recognition.
Respect.
“I’ve been watching you,” he said quietly.
I blinked. “Watching me?”
He nodded.
“Not as a beggar. As an investigator. Julian’s crimes weren’t the only thing I was tracking.”
He stepped closer.
“I saw what you went through. Everything you sacrificed. Everything you lost.”
My throat tightened.
Then he added, gently:
“Your mother’s surgery has already been arranged. Fully covered.”
My breath stopped.
For the first time in a long time… I broke down.
Not from pain.
But from relief I didn’t think I would ever feel again.
Then Gabriel did something unexpected.
