Unraveling Truths
The wedding hall was grand, understated elegance clashing with the tension in the air. I watched Sienna, radiant and unaware, as she approached the altar. Every movement was a reminder of what I had lost.
Then came the moment. The box. I had no idea how it would land, but I felt the thrill of tension in the air when Sienna, with tentative fingers, lifted the box’s lid.
“What is this?”
The gasps from the guests echoed like thunder, drowning out any music. I imagined my mother’s face, tightening in horror, while my father’s eyes darted around, desperate to regain control.
“This isn’t—” Sienna stammered, her voice trembling.
The marriage certificate lay atop the flash drive, a damning testament to Arthur’s duplicity. She looked at our parents, then back at the box, confusion etching deeper lines on her face.
“What does this mean?” she whispered, desperately seeking answers in their faces.
My father’s complexion paled. “Sienna, don’t. It’s not what you think!”
“No! It’s too late for that,” Sienna shot back, her hand shaking as she reached for the flash drive. I could almost hear my heart beating louder, each thud resonating with anticipation.
“I need to know the truth,” she declared, inserting it into the nearby projector.
The screen came to life, and the entire room held its breath. My fingers itched with the thrill of confrontation. Would they finally see? Would the façade that Sienna had crafted crumble before our eyes?
But just as the opening image flickered, the screen went black.
Urgent Calls
The phone rang, shattering the quiet of my apartment. It was Brooke, her voice strained, barely a whisper. “Eleanor, I need your help. He found out.”
“Who? Arthur?”
“Yes, he confronted me after your call. He’s furious. He said if I breathe a word about the marriage certificate, he’ll make sure I regret it.”
I gripped the counter, my heart pounding. “What did you tell him?”
“I tried to play dumb. But he knows. He knows I’m onto him.”
“You need to get out of there,” I urged, scanning my mind for a plan. “Can you leave?”
“I don’t have anywhere to go. I can’t take my son—”
I interrupted, “You need to go public, then. I’ll help you, Brooke. We’ll expose him together.”
The resolve in my voice took me by surprise. “No more hiding.”
“But what if he comes after me?” she asked, fear palpable in her tone.
“Then we fight back. Together. He can’t control us forever.”
