The Plan My Husband Had Kept Secret Since High School
I left home that morning believing I was about to give my husband the perfect anniversary surprise.
A few hours later, I returned carrying a small black gift bag—and overheard a conversation that made me question every memory we had ever shared.
The worst part was not hearing Daniel say that I had walked into his trap.
It was realizing that the love story I had believed in since childhood might have been carefully arranged by the person I trusted most.
Daniel was not simply my husband.
He had been my best friend for almost my entire life.
Our mothers became close when we were toddlers, and our families lived in neighboring houses. Most of my earliest memories included him in some way.
We sat beside each other in preschool.
We built science projects together.
We attended the same birthday parties and spent long summer afternoons running between our backyards.
Whenever my crayons broke, Daniel handed me one of his. Whenever the school cafeteria became crowded, I saved the seat beside me for him.
By fourth grade, he had already decided that protecting me was his responsibility.
One afternoon, a boy made an unkind comment about my oversized glasses. Before I had the courage to defend myself, Daniel stepped between us.
He received detention for the argument.
“I don’t care,” he told me afterward. “Nobody gets to make you feel small, Ashley.”
