I caught his wrist before his hand touched the folder.

Training moved faster than anger. I turned with him, used his own momentum, and drove his shoulder against the edge of the defense table hard enough to knock the breath out of him. Not a strike. Not revenge. Control. His face twisted with rage as my forearm pinned him in place.
“Don’t ever make a move like that in a courtroom again,” I said.
“Bailiff!” Judge Miller barked. “Restrain him.”
The bailiff pulled Arthur back while David Hayes pressed both hands on the bench and tried to steady his breathing. “Your Honor, I was jumped in the parking garage by two men trying to take those records. Those tax receipts prove the plaintiff’s case is built on fraud.”
Sterling’s mouth opened, but nothing useful came out. Judge Miller opened the file anyway.
The first page was a county tax ledger. The second was a stack of red-stamped receipts. The third was the wire transfer trail from my military credit union account, every payment tied to the ranch Arthur said I had abandoned.
Then Hayes slid forward one more document that had not been in the tax file yesterday.
A preliminary contract with Apex Commercial Developers.
Sterling went white. Not pale. White. His hand shook so hard the page rattled against the bench, because that contract did not say anything about preserving family land. It described demolition access, commercial zoning, and my name being removed from the deed before closing.
Arthur stopped shouting. He just stared at that paper like it had betrayed him.
Judge Miller’s voice dropped. “Mr. Vance, before I rule on anything in this courtroom, you are going to explain why a tax archivist was assaulted over records you claimed did not exist.”
That was when the doors opened again.
A stern-faced military police officer stepped inside, eyes locked on me, one hand resting on his utility belt.
“Captain Vance,” he said loudly. “We have a problem.”
