Secrets Long Buried
Their voices intertwined as they began to read aloud, snippets of their father’s regrets tumbling into the auditorium like stones dropping into still water. Elias felt his breath hitch. Fragments of their mother’s past emerged, glimmers of darkness that he had tried to shield them from.
“I was wrong to leave,” Maya read, her eyes misting. “Your mother fought battles I couldn’t understand. She loved you more than you know.”
Elias’s mind echoed with the conversations he had shared with his brother. Had he known then what he was hearing now?
Images of late-night talks, whispered regrets, and the promise of a different life flooded back. Anguish twisted in his gut. He had believed in his brother’s silence, thought it was the better choice.
Suddenly, a gasp cut through the air. Elise turned sharply, her wide eyes locking onto Elias. “Did you know about this?” she asked, the weight of the question hanging in the space between them.
The audience burst with murmurs, and Elias could feel their collective curiosity pressing against him like a storm. The triplets turned to him, their eyes searching for answers, leaving him to confront the difficult choices he must now make.
Unraveling Ties
Elise’s question hit me like a cold wave. “Did you know about this?” My heart raced, and I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks. The room blurred around me as the girls continued reading, their voices intertwining with the hum of the audience.
Nora’s voice trembled slightly as she recited a line from one of the letters. “He wanted us back,” she said. “He thought about us every day.”
Crowds around me gasped softly, but I felt paralyzed, as if the floor had dropped out beneath me. How could I explain the conversations we had or the shadows that stretched between us?
“He believed he could fix everything. He wanted to come back,” Maya added, her eyes scanning the crowd, searching for someone—perhaps for me.
With each word, the atmosphere shifted, becoming heavier, more suffocating. “He wrote about us…” Elise paused, her voice faltering. “About how he missed our birthdays, and how he regrets everything.”
My mind raced. Had I been living a lie? Every late night, every scraped knee and dropped ice cream cone, every moment I thought defined our bond now felt tainted by the specter of a father waiting in the shadows.
As they concluded their reading, I caught Elise’s eyes, wide and searching. “Did you know?” she whispered, only for me to hear. A question laced with hope and despair. I opened my mouth, but no words came.
