A 10-year-old boy named Alexander Kettler was playing in his grandmother’s home in Diepholz, Germany, when he stumbled across something no child could ever imagine finding: a sarcophagus. Three boxes had previously gone unnoticed in the attic for decades.

“There was a huge sarcophagus and inside a mummy,” his father Lutz Wolfgang said. “Then we opened the other cases and found an earthenware Egyptian death mask and a Canopic Jar.”

The 1.6-meter mummy’s origins left the family baffled. His father could only speculate, as his grandfather, who passed away 12 years prior, had traveled through North Africa in the 1950s but spoke very little of his travels.

For weeks, experts tried to determine whether the mummy was authentic. The answer turned out to be: yes and no. It had a real human skull, but a plastic skeleton.
