After exploring the rows of evergreens, they chose a small fir tree. It wasn’t the tallest or the fullest, but it felt perfect for their little family. They loaded it into the car and headed home, excited to decorate it together.
Decorating Together
That evening, holiday music played softly while Noah set up the tree and Emma carefully untangled strings of lights.
Their ornaments were simple. Some had been handmade by Emma’s grandmother many years earlier, while others were wooden keepsakes collected over time. Every decoration carried a memory, making the tree feel even more meaningful.
When everything was ready, Emma held Lily close to the glowing tree. The baby reached toward a sparkling ornament, making both parents laugh.
A Playful Christmas Photo
As they admired the finished tree, Noah suggested taking a special picture.
For just a few seconds, he gently placed Lily inside a large, soft-lined decorative basket beneath the lower branches while Emma stood right beside her with the camera. Both parents remained within arm’s reach the entire time.
Lily smiled as the lights twinkled above her, and Emma captured the perfect photograph before picking her up immediately.
Looking at the picture later, they joked that Lily was “the greatest Christmas gift” they had ever received.
Neither of them realized that this simple photo would become the beginning of a family tradition.
A Tradition That Grew Every Year
Each Christmas, the family recreated the holiday photo in a way that matched Lily’s age.
At two years old, she stood proudly beside the tree holding a candy cane.
At five, she carefully hung ornaments on the lower branches.
At eight, she helped make popcorn garlands.
By twelve, she insisted on decorating the entire tree herself.
Year after year, the photos told the story of a growing child and a growing family.
