“And Julian?”
Rachel hesitated.
“He stood there.”
The garden blurred slightly.
“Did you say anything?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“I reminded them you wanted the formal family pictures to include both of you.”
“What did Eleanor say?”
Rachel’s mouth tightened.
“She said you had already been in enough photographs.”
I looked down at my glass.
“There’s more.”
I already knew.
People always said there was more when the first part had been softened.
“What?”
“Madeline was missing at first. I went to call her because Eleanor said she wanted all her children.”
“That’s fair.”
“I said Eleanor was needed for another photo with you.”
Rachel looked directly at me.
“She pointed toward the ballroom and said, ‘I already took pictures with that girl.’”
For a moment, the music disappeared.
That girl.
Not Natalie.
Not her son’s wife.
Not the bride whose wedding she was attending.
That girl.
I looked at Eleanor.
She stood near the lake speaking to two women in evening gowns.
Perfect posture.
Family bracelet absent because she had insisted I wear it.
