“Colonel Carter?”
That was all the man on the line said at first, but it was enough to make my father take one small step back.
Not big. Not dramatic. Just enough for everyone in the foyer to see that Charles Carter had finally heard a title he could not sneer at.
Amanda was still gripping my wrist. Daniel stood frozen beside the dining room archway, bourbon dripping from his hand onto the polished floor. Someone at the table whispered, “Colonel?” like the word had changed the shape of the room.

Then my brother, who had stayed quiet my whole life, looked at our father and said, “Dad… do you understand what she just came from?”
The voice on the phone changed. Another man came on, older, sharper, unmistakably official.
“Colonel Carter, before we proceed, the Chairman would like to speak to you directly regarding the civilians recovered under your command, including the child you carried out yourself, and the statement your team filed about what happened at—”
