Caleb’s Revelation
When Caleb finally woke, his eyes were wide, as if he had crossed through some threshold. “Mom,” he said weakly, “you won’t believe what I saw.”
“What do you mean?” I leaned in, clutching his hand. His grip tightened momentarily, and I could feel the strength returning to him.
“While I was unconscious, I had visions,” he continued, his voice a mixture of awe and confusion. “They were memories… mine, but intertwined with Valerie’s.”
My heart raced. “What kind of memories?”
“Mom, I saw things that connected us. Moments from my childhood where she was there—before the affair, before the pain. She was protecting me from something dark.”
“Protecting you? From what?” I asked, barely able to process this revelation.
“From Dad’s past. It wasn’t just his betrayal; it was more complicated than that. I think she knew about his other affairs, things he hid even from me.”
“Valerie?” I whispered, incredulous.
“I believe she wanted to shield us from the truth. She loved Dad, but she also saw the damage he caused. She wasn’t the enemy, Mom—she was a victim. It’s all coming together, but I can’t help feeling lost.”
As the weight of his words sank in, I began to see Valerie not as the woman who had torn our family apart, but as someone who had been caught in the storm of my husband’s choices. It felt like a gut punch, the clarity so overwhelming I almost couldn’t breathe.
“Do you understand?” Caleb asked, his eyes searching mine for answers. “If we face this together, maybe we can finally heal.”
