As I call for help, panic ensues
“Call 911!” My voice trembles as I rush to my father, who’s struggling to breathe on the floor. The room feels smaller, suffocating. “Dad, stay with me!”
Mason steps in, his calmness a stark contrast to my rising panic. “I’ve got this,” he assures me, kneeling beside my father. He starts chest compressions, counting steadily. “One, two, three—”
The children stand frozen, wide-eyed at the chaos unfolding. “What’s happening?” my son whispers, clinging to his sister. I crouch down, trying to keep my voice steady, though my heart races.
“Grandpa’s just… tired. We need help, okay?” I force a smile, but it falters as I glance back at Mason, who is working with an intensity I’ve never seen before.
I grab my phone, fingers fumbling as I dial. “Please, hurry,” I plead, praying they can hear the urgency in my voice. “My father… he’s—”
The sirens wail in the distance, growing louder. Mason continues to pump, sweat beading on his forehead. “Just a little longer, sir,” he murmurs, though I know it’s a lie.
Finally, the paramedics burst through the door, and my heart sinks further. “What’s his condition?” one asks, his eyes scanning the scene.
“He… he just collapsed,” I choke, stepping aside as they take over. I can barely watch as they wheel my father out, my mind swirling with doubts and fear.
“Mom, is Grandpa going to be okay?” My daughter’s small voice pulls me back. I kneel close, brushing her hair back with trembling fingers. “We’re going to find out, honey.”
But are we really? The uncertainty is a weight pressing down on my chest.
At the hospital
The sterile smell of antiseptic fills my nostrils as I wait in the hospital room. A doctor finally emerges, her expression grave. “He’s stable, but he suffered a heart attack.”
Relief washes over me, but it’s tinged with worry. I step into my father’s room, his face pale against the stark white sheets. “What happened?” I manage to ask, the question heavy with unspoken emotions.
He opens his eyes, looking older and more vulnerable than I remember. “I thought… I thought I was doing what was best for you,” he admits, his voice faltering.
“By cutting me off?” I retort, anger flaring again. “You didn’t protect me. You pushed me away.”
A flicker of remorse passes over his features. “I didn’t want to lose you to… him.” He nods toward the door, where Mason is anxiously pacing.
“The photo, Dad,” I press, gesturing towards the mantle in my mind, the one I’d seen when he arrived—us all smiling together. “You must have seen it. You saw Mason.”
“I didn’t—” he starts, but the denial feels thin, like a fragile wall ready to crumble. I can see the discomfort in his eyes, an unspoken truth lingering between us.
The air thickens. I realize he’s still battling the disdain he harbors for the man I love. I want to scream, to shake him into understanding. Instead, my throat closes up.
Just then, the door swings open, and a nurse steps in, her expression unreadable. “Excuse me,” she says, her eyes darting between us. “I have something important to tell you about your father’s health—something he hasn’t shared.”
