And Julian was stupid enough to believe silence meant surrender.
A siren wailed faintly outside.
Arthur noticed it first. His head turned toward the windows.
I saw the flicker in his eyes.
Not fear yet.
Recognition.
He had heard that sound before in boardrooms where enemies fell.
Julian was still performing.
“Everyone,” he announced, spreading his arms, “I apologize for this scene. My wife has always struggled with jealousy. Today, she attacked an innocent pregnant woman.”
Chloe widened her eyes and leaned into him.
I laughed.
It hurt so badly that black spots burst at the edges of my vision, but I laughed anyway.
Julian’s jaw twitched. “What is funny?”
“You rehearsed that,” I said. “But you forgot the cameras.”
Part 3: The Clock Strikes Two
Julian froze, his arrogant smile wavering as his eyes darted toward the high corners of the vaulted ceiling.
“The security system was turned off for the party,” Beatrice said smoothly, though a note of strain cracked her cultured tone. She adjusted her pearls, glaring down at me with disdain. “Stop trying to intimidate us, Clara. You have nothing.”
“The house cameras, yes,” I choked out, pushing myself up into a seated position despite the sharp, throbbing agony radiating through my back and hips. I cupped my stomach protectively, feeling the firm, rapid kicks of my unborn baby inside. Hang on, little one. Just a few more seconds.
I looked directly at Chloe, whose hand was still resting on her flat stomach. “I’m not talking about the house cameras, Jules. I’m talking about the diamond brooch your father gave your mother for their thirtieth anniversary. The one she insisted I wear today so everyone would see how ‘generous’ the Vance family is.”
Beatrice’s hand flew to her collarbone, where the intricate platinum-and-diamond pin sparkled against her silk dress.
“A high-definition pinhole lens,” I whispered, my bloody smile widening. “With a live satellite uplink directly to the Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Division. They’ve seen every second. They heard your father call me trash. They heard Julian admit to shoving an eight-month-pregnant woman. And more importantly… they heard you admit to the offshore tax havens three minutes before the cake was cut.”
Arthur’s face drained of every drop of color. “What did you say?”
Ding-dong.
The front chime didn’t echo like a guest arriving. It was instantly drowned out by the thunderous, heavy impact of a battering ram splintering the grand double mahogany doors at the front entrance.
“FBI! Nobody move! Stay where you are!”
Shrieks echoed through the ballroom as fifty high-society guests scrambled backward, spilling vintage champagne and knocking over flower arrangements. A squad of armed federal agents in tactical gear flooded the room, their rifles raised, followed by plainclothes investigators carrying stack after stack of federal search warrants.
At the head of the team walked Senior Special Agent Marcus Thorne, holding a thick leather binder.
Julian stepped back instinctively, his face pale as chalk, grabbing Chloe’s arm so hard she let out a squeal of pain. “Dad… what is this? Tell them who we are!”
Arthur tried to step forward, adopting his usual commanding boardroom posture. “Officer, I am Arthur Vance. This is a private residence, and you are trespassing on—”
“Save it, Mr. Vance,” Agent Thorne cut in, not even bothering to look at him. He motioned to the tactical team. “Secure the perimeter. No one leaves. Seize all mobile devices, laptops, and hard drives immediately.”
Agent Thorne walked straight past the billionaire, straight past the stunned guests, and dropped to one knee beside me on the floor. His harsh expression softened completely as he motioned for a team of paramedics waiting in the foyer.
“Clara,” Thorne said gently, reaching out to help support my back. “We got the audio feed. Are you alright?”
“The baby,” I gasped, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes from the sheer physical pain. “He shoved me. I need to get to the hospital.”
Thorne’s head snapped up, his eyes locking onto Julian with an icy, lethal intensity. “Paramedics! I need a gurney in here now! Priority one!”
