The King’s Reckoning
“Your Majesty,” I said, stepping into the throne room, the royal banners swaying like silent witnesses.
The king’s eyes flicked to my uniform, then to the hidden door where guards stood like statues. “Explain yourself, Commander.”
“The child you were told died in the fire—my son, Samuel—was never buried. Amelia hid him in a safe house, feeding the kingdom a lie to protect a fortune.”
A gasp rippled through the assembly. I felt the weight of every hidden secret press against my chest.
“The medals you praised,” I continued, “were my actions, not Amelia’s. She forged my record to divert attention from the embezzlement that funded the disaster’s cover‑up.”
The king’s face hardened, the crown catching a glint of doubt. “You accuse your own sister of treason before the altar?”
“I accuse her of stealing my identity, my son, and the kingdom’s future.”
Prince Sebastian stepped forward, his voice shaking. “If this is true, why keep it hidden?”
“Because the vault holds the stolen millions. The wedding was a staged distraction, a trap to keep the world from seeing the truth.”
Silence fell, broken only by the distant ticking of the palace clock. I felt a cold certainty settle in my bones.
“Your Majesty,” I said, lowering my voice, “the only way to end this is to acknowledge the truth. Return my son, expose Amelia’s crimes, and let the vault be opened to the people.”
The king rose, his voice resonating through the marble. “Very well. Let the truth be spoken, and may the kingdom heal.”
