Hospital Revelation
The lab’s white door swung open, and a technician handed Maya a sealed envelope.
She tore it open, heart pounding, and read the first line: *DNA analysis complete – paternal match confirmed*.
“The extra digit is a hereditary trait from the father’s side,” the report continued. “The genetic marker aligns with Nathan’s DNA profile. No evidence of external paternity.”
She stared at the paper, at the tiny hand with six fingers curled around the blanket.
“But there’s more,” the technician added, sliding another sheet across the counter.
A thick folder labeled *Adoption Records – Confidential* lay inside. Maya flipped to the first page: a birth certificate for their eldest daughter, Lily, marked “adopted” with a red stamp.
“Original mother: unknown. Adopted by Maya and Nathan, 2012.”
The dates matched the time Maya had forgotten to mention the night she found a baby abandoned at the park—her own secret, now a mirror of the current lie.
She felt the room tilt. The boy’s soft breaths, the nurse’s gentle hum, the scent of antiseptic—all suddenly held new weight.
“He’s my son,” Maya whispered, tears spilling onto the paperwork.
“And Lily… she’s not our biological child either,” she said, voice breaking, realizing the web of hidden truths that had bound their family.
She turned to the empty hallway, hearing the distant echo of a heart monitor beeping, a reminder that the present still pulsed with life, even as the past unraveled.
