Revelations and Lies
After a tense silence, Michael finally spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. “We’ve been seeing each other for months.”
My heart raced as the words crashed over me like icy water. Months? How had I been so blind? “What about Mark? What about your friendship?”
“It’s complicated,” he muttered. “I didn’t want to hurt you.”
“You didn’t want to hurt me?” I laughed bitterly, tears stinging my eyes. “You’ve shattered my entire world.”
Just then, Diane chimed in, her tone disturbingly calm as she folded her arms. “I encouraged them, you know. For the family legacy.”
The words pierced through me like a knife. “You what?” I gasped, astonished. “You condoned this?”
Diane shrugged, unfazed. “A family needs an heir, and Khloe is perfectly suited for it. It’s what we’ve always wanted.”
The betrayal hung in the air, thick and suffocating. The pieces finally clicked into place, each revelation a brutal reminder of my naivety. Just as I began to process the enormity of it all, my phone buzzed with a video message from Khloe, leaving me anxious about its content.
Confrontation in the Doorway
I stormed out of the house, rage coursing through me like fire. The chill of the evening air hit my face, but it did nothing to cool the heat spiraling within. My heart raced as I pushed through the storm door, desperate to escape the web of betrayal that had just been spun in front of me.
Just then, I saw him—Mark, standing there with his suitcase, confusion etched across his features. “What’s wrong?” he asked, his brow furrowing. Anger bubbled up inside me again.
“What’s wrong? You want to know what’s wrong?”
I felt the words bursting from my lips, and I recounted everything: Khloe, the baby, Michael. Mark’s face blanched, but it was the flicker of guilt that caught my breath. Why was he looking like that?
My gaze darted to his phone, where a notification from Khloe flashed ominously. “You’re not even trying to hide it, are you?” I snapped. Mark’s expression shifted, panic clashing with his guilt.
“It’s not what you think.”
He tried to cover the screen, but it was too late. My thoughts began to race ahead, piecing together the lies that had been whispered in my ear while I was oblivious. Could everyone really have been in on this charade?
