Vanessa’s Last Move
The cabin shuddered as the plane descended, the lights flickering like nervous fireflies.
“Stay calm,” a voice crackled over the intercom, but my ear only caught the metallic clank of the landing gear.
Vanessa, eyes wide, slipped a small black USB into the seam of my bag while I was bent over the tray table, pretending to read the safety card.
“You’ll need this,” she whispered, her breath hot against my cheek. “It proves everything. It can clear me.”
She pressed the device against the leather, a brief, desperate gesture, then vanished into the aisle as the flight attendant shouted, “Brace for impact!”
The aircraft lurched, a sudden, gut‑wrenching jolt that sent my coffee spilling across the armrest.
All around me, passengers clutched armrests, some sobbing, others muttering prayers.
When the turbulence settled, a dull thud echoed through the fuselage.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we have made an emergency landing at an unmarked airfield,” the pilot’s voice announced, strained and distant.
The cabin doors sealed with a pneumatic hiss, a cold certainty that locked us in.
I stared at the bag, my heart pounding, and felt the faint bulge where Vanessa’s hand had slipped the USB.
My fingers trembled as I fished it out, the plastic cold against my skin.
“You’re going to regret this,” I muttered, though the words felt hollow.
She was gone, leaving only the whir of the aircraft’s auxiliary engines and the low murmur of frightened travelers.
