During a heat wave, the location of your fan can make all the difference. Find out why placing it in front of the window allows you to better refresh your interior

Why this technique can improve airflow

Behind this trick is a well-known physical principle. By expelling air to the outside, the fan creates a slight pressure difference that encourages the entry of a new volume of air into the home.

This phenomenon makes it possible to set up what is called cross-ventilation. Even in an apartment that is not through, it is possible to achieve this result thanks to a half-open door, another window or a skylight in an adjoining room.

The objective is therefore no longer just to create a feeling of freshness on the skin, but to renew the air inside in order to evacuate the heat accumulated throughout the day.

The right time to place your fan in front of the window

However, this method does not work at any time. For it to be truly effective, the outdoor air must be cooler than the indoor air.

La situation se présente souvent en soirée ou durant la nuit. Après une journée ensoleillée, les murs, les sols et les meubles continuent de restituer la chaleur emmagasinée. Pendant ce temps, la température extérieure commence progressivement à diminuer.

This is precisely when the outward-facing fan can help speed up the cooling of the home. The very early morning is also a good time to evacuate the residual heat before the return of high temperatures.

Conversely, during the hottest hours of the day, it is generally best to keep windows, curtains and shutters closed to limit heat gain.
