Inside the crowded family courtroom in downtown Chicago, nobody moved.
Olivia Carter felt her chest tighten anew. The stares of the onlookers weighed on her, but this was her moment. She lifted her chin, pushing back the overwhelming urge to hide.
“Your Honor,” she began, her voice hesitant but growing stronger. “I need to say something.”
The judge’s eyebrows furrowed slightly, and she took a breath. “I have dedicated my life to raising our sons while he built his fortune.” She pointed a finger at Jonathan, who remained seated, arms crossed. “I sacrificed everything for them.”
Gasps rippled through the courtroom as she pressed on. “He was too busy expanding his empire to notice them growing up, to notice their fears, their tears. Tell me, who was there for the sleepless nights? Who dried their tears when they fell?”
Jonathan’s attorneys shifted uncomfortably, casting nervous glances at each other. Olivia felt a flicker of hope. Maybe this was working.
“I’m not asking for money or things,” she said, her voice trembling but resolute. “I’m asking for the chance to raise them in a safe, loving home.”
The judge adjusted his glasses again, his expression inscrutable. Olivia caught a hint of intrigue in his gaze, and she pressed onward, feeling the adrenaline surge through her veins.
“Every meal I cooked, every tear I wiped away, every single moment I dedicated to those boys was done out of love,” she declared, glancing at Ethan and Mason, who were watching her intently. “I am their mother.”
A murmur arose in the gallery, a mix of sympathy and shock. She glanced at Jonathan, whose composure was cracking, a muscle twitching in his jaw.
“And I won’t let him take them from me without a fight.”
A Hidden Truth
As Olivia gathered her thoughts, a sudden whisper cut through the tension in the air. Ethan’s wide eyes darted toward Mason.
“Mason, did you hear that?” he whispered, glancing back at their father. “Dad just told Grandma he’s going to take us away… for good.”
The words sent a shiver down Mason’s spine. “What do you mean?” he asked, fear creeping into his voice.
“I don’t know. But I heard him say it. He doesn’t care about us. It’s all about his business,” Ethan said, glancing casually to ensure no one was watching.
