A man from Washington state walked up to a beach in Lahaina, Maui, picked up a coconut-sized rock, and hurled it straight at “Lani” — a critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal. The rock nearly hit her in the head and sent her scrambling out of the water.

Meanwhile, NOAA special agents arrested Lytvynchuk near Seattle. He now faces federal court on charges under both the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act — up to $70,000 in fines and a year in prison on the table.

Maui Mayor Richard Bissen noted that Lani is part of the community’s “ocean ohana,” especially meaningful after she returned to Lahaina following the devastating 2023 wildfires.

With only around 1,600 Hawaiian monk seals left in the wild, it turns out some communities take wildlife protection very, very seriously.
